OVERVIEW | It is no secret that Em has a penchant for a gin on the stronger abv side let’s say so it was smiles all round at the weekend when Caorunn arrived at The Gin To My Tonic Festival Harrogate with their Highland Strength Gin. It is a gin that has been on the must try list for some time... Launched on World Gin Day this year the Highland Strength is bursting with robust juniper forward flavour. It has the same traditional Scottish botanicals as their original expression except that the abv is now 54%. This enhances the flavour profile and makes for a gin that truly tantalises the tastebuds. There are 11 botanicals in total, 6 traditional and 5 hand-foraged, and these include juniper berries, coriander seed, lemon peel, orange peel, angelica root, cassia bark, rowan berries, coul blush apple, heather, dandelion leaf and bog myrtle. The hand-foraged botanicals, particularly the rowan berry are extremely important to this gin, so much so that the name is the Gaelic word for Rowan Berry. First and foremost the Highland Strength is unmistakingly and deliciously juniper forward. Peppered notes are well balanced with delicate fruit and a gentle herbaceous edge to give a well rounded complex gin. It is also incredibly smooth both neat over ice and with paired with Fever-Tree Indian tonic water and a slice of red apple. Without a doubt this is a stellar creation made by Gin Master Simon Buley and a very welcome addition to the gin collection. Oh - and if you are wondering what the gold writing is on the bottle Caorunn also had their very own calligrapher personalising bottles for the good people of Harrogate.... this one is not for sharing though ‘Em’s bottle’ |
