Although third-tier Le Difese, inaugural vintage 2002, may do the work of the estate's "everyday" wine, when the estate in question is Tenuta San Guido, the “everyday” wine is a reason to celebrate. Ironically, the Le Difese, a Sangiovese and Cabernet blend, is even more difficult than Sassicaia to obtain, for the estate produces very little and exports even less--most of the 500 cases produced goes to local Bolgheri restaurants. The ’11 Le Difese, 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Sangiovese, is a spicy, expressive, elegant wine that marries Tuscan earthiness with French style. Fresh in the mouth, brimming with juicy fruit and fragrant wildflowers, this deeply enjoyable ’11 Le Difese finishes with a satisfying silkiness. |
